title: Earthlings

Before i post this link i’d like to say a few things. I’m speaking as someone who eats meat, but prefers not to, i’m a former vegetarian and still fully support and prefer the vegetarian lifestyle but believe both are natural ways to eat.  PETA’s views do not represent my views or the views of Emagine.

First of all, it is natural, nature and normal for humankind to use animal products like milk, eggs and skin for warmth and to slaughter animals for food. This documentary is portraying the excess and abuse of this natural behavior and could leave one feeling like all of this behavior is bad, perhaps that was the intention but i don’t think the message need be that harsh if one could give it time for reflection.

As i said, it’s normal, it’s nature to do those things BUT it is imperative that we make informed decisions whenever we make decisions about anything! This is no different, it’s not easy to watch, it’s not pretty and it is inhuman, but it is the unfortunate reality and until we allow ourselves to see it, we will continue to consume it and support it.

I’m no crazy vegan activist (and if i was there’d be nothing wrong with that as long as i supplemented my diet accordingly) but i believe in the rights of all “earthlings” with a passion and i believe it’s vitally important not least for “them” but also for “us” that we make ourselves aware and make informed decisions and do whatever we can to make whatever difference we can.

“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals… We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far beneath ourselves. And therein we err, we greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complex than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.”
-Henry Beston (quote featured in Earthlings)
