title: Uncommon advice to the new Muslim
So many new muslims go to other reverts (common term for converts to Islam) and other muslims for advice they may have for them as they are starting on this amazing and huge journey! It was asked on a sisters forum today and i thought i’d like to share what my reply was.
Honestly… take it slow! Don’t dive in head first because you will burn out fast (you probably will anyway but don’t let it put a dent in your eman, it’s normal) give yourself time to adjust and breath and ease into it, start with the fard (obligatory) and then gradually build up from there.
You won’t EVER be the perfect muslim particularly not right after your shahada! So don’t try to be!
You WILL be let down by the muslim community in general, so PLEASE don’t pin any hopes on “them” or have your expectations high. Also, you’ll make mistakes, it’s human, just like in anything else, Allah knows this so don’t beat yourself up, just recognise your mistakes, make Tawbah (repent) and move on with the intention to not do it again with Allah’s help.
Islam was revealed over 23 years, you don’t know all there is to know now, you won’t ever, and so don’t judge other people or dish out fatwa’s (religious rulings)
Don’t burn any bridges, you’ll regret it. And if any are burning already, try to put the fire out rather than letting it burn, you’ll be better for it.
Keep your head level and your eman (faith) steady and inshaallah Allah will bless and keep you always on sirat al mustaqeem (the straight path)
All of this from some sad and some painful experience of my own and many many other reverts before and after me.

Mashaallah I totally agree. Just the other day I was talking to some friends of mine about this.
I also advice reverts to take it slow. Don't get frustrated that you can't do it all at once. It will come in time inshaallah. Becomming a muslim is like building a house. First you need the foundation so the building will not collapse and then you gradually add more and more.

Find a good mosque that you feel comfortable with.
