title: Glossary
Muslimas Oasis prides itself on being an open and welcome place for people from all walks of life, Muslim or Not. However, as our name suggests, we are an “Oasis” for the voices and views of Muslim Women (also called Muslimas or more correctly in Arabic Muslimat) so many of our articles and comments include Arabic words commonly used by Muslims from all over the world. This is a glossary of those words.
There is no “correct” way of transliterating an Arabic word to English therefore many of the words here have various spellings, for simplicity sake I’m going to use either the most commonly used spelling, the most easily understood phonetic spelling or my own preferred spelling.
Remember if you don’t understand something that you read anywhere on our site or social network pages, Questions are always welcome.
This list is under construction, there is much I intend to add here.
Allah
This is the Arabic word for God however unlike the English word it does not have a Plural and is neither Masculine nor Feminine.
Alhamdolillah
Literally “The praise is for Allah”. This phrase is used by Muslims to express Thanks and Gratitude to Allah.
As-Salamu Alekom
This is a greeting used among Muslims which means “Peace be upon you” the response to this is Wa Alekom As-Salam (And on you be peace).
InshaAllah
God Willing.
MashaAllah
By Gods Will. Muslims say this when they see something they like, it is used much like a prayer for protection against envy.
Jazak Allahu Khairun
May Allah reward you with good.
AstaghferAllah
May Allah forgive me.
